About the City
Almaty, formerly Alma-Ata, is the largest city in Kazakhstan and one of the principal cultural, commercial, financial, and innovation centres of Central Asia.
The city is located in southern Kazakhstan at the foothills of the Trans-Ili Alatau mountains, at an elevation of approximately 700–900 metres. The Big Almaty and Small Almaty rivers descend from the surrounding mountains and flow through the city towards the plains.
Almaty served as the capital of Kazakhstan from 1929 until 1997. Although the capital was later transferred to Astana, Almaty remains the country’s cultural and financial heart and is often referred to as the Southern Capital.
The city has hosted major international events, including the 2011 Asian Winter Games and the 2017 Winter Universiade. Almaty is served by an international airport, metro, buses, and trolleybuses.
Nearby natural and recreational destinations include Ile-Alatau National Park, Big Almaty Lake, the Medeu high-altitude ice rink, and the Shymbulak ski resort.
